If you were approved for a federal tax extension and you've paid 90 percent of your 2009 state income tax liability, or 100 percent of your 2008 state tax liability through your estimated tax payments, your withholding tax, or a combination of both, then the State of Montana will automatically grant you a six month tax extension. If you need to make a state tax payment, you'll need to submit Montana Form EXT-09 (PDF). Include a copy of your federal extension (IRS 4868) when you file your state tax return.

Filing for a Montana tax extension will not grant you extra time to pay any tax balance due. Your balance must be paid by April 15 to avoid possible penalties.

If you already received an approval notification from ExpressExtension, and you don't need to make a tax payment, then you're all done.
